Review: Gentlemen (Michael Northrop) (original post 10/31/09)

Title: Gentlemen
Author: Michael Northrop
Genre: Fiction/Guys Lit
Pages: 256
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Summary: (from the flap) Micheal, Tommy, Mixer, and Bones aren’t just from the wrong side of the tracks—they’re from the wrong side of everything. Except for Mr. Haberman, their remedial English teacher, no one at their high school takes them seriously. Haberman calls them “gentlemen,” but everyone else ignores them—or, in Bones’s case, is dead afraid of them. When one of their close-knit group goes missing, the clues all seem to point in one direction: to Mr. Haberman.

Review:  I am a sucker for a good mystery though I usually prefer the detective genre. That said, I enjoyed this book for it's main character/narrator who is a mix of not-into-school/no one cares and deep insight and loyalty. It's easy to see how events are misleading, adolescence is confusing, and how events snowball out of control. There is suspense, friendship, intrigue, and sadness all rolled into this easy read. Guys in particular will relate to the characters and their daily lives.
